Notes:

Most likely the arms of the FitzAlan earls of Arundel or the Mowbrays. The FitzAlan earls of Arundel used gules, lion rampant or; in the period of this piece's manufacture, the earldom would have been held by one of two individuals: Richard FitzAlan and his son, Edmund. Richard FitzAlan was created earl of Arundel in 1289; he was summoned to serve against the Scots in 1299 and 1300-01, and is recorded both at the battle of Falkirk (1298) and the siege of Carlaverock (1300). He sealed with a lion rampant in 1301; a year later he died, leaving his son Edmund, a minor, as heir. Edmund came of age in 1306 and, following Edward I's death, became embroiled in the murky politics of Edward II's reign. Broadly speaking he was a moderate, but in Edward II's final conflict with Isabella and Mortimer, he ultimately sided with Edward, and, as a result, was executed without any apparent attempt at a trial in 1326. The Mowbray arms were gules, a lion rampant argent; at this period they are represented by John de Mowbray of Thirsk. John de Mowbray was first summoned to serve against the Scots in 1308, and lived out his political life in Edward II's reign. He eventually became a vigorous opponent of the latter, and was a captain of the rebels at Boroughbridge in 1322. He was captured, and is listed amongst those knight banneret who were drawn and hung. His lands were confiscated, but were returned to his heir by the young Edward III in 1327, as, indeed, were the Arundel lands to the FitzAlan heir.
