A cast copper-alloy harness pendant in three pieces, consisting of a frame, a hinged swinging back-plate and a fixing plate. The fixing plate has a lozenge-shaped body with four lugs spaced evenly at mid points on the sides, upper left missing; the bottommost point of the lozenge is also missing. It is decorated with a large inscribed fleur-de-lys on a diapered background. The frame is in the shape of a Tudor rose with the swinging circular back-plate plain; the frame's suspension loop is broken. Measurements: Total: 32 mm x 90.5 mm. Hanger 32 mm x 45 mm. Pendant 28.5 mm at the widest point x 45.5 mm including broken loop; back plate 25.5 mm diameter, length including swinger loop 33 mm.
Notes:
This complexity of this two-part pendant suggests a discerning and wealthy owner, as befits its find location of Harworth, close to the royal castle of Tickhill. The design on the piece is broadly floral; the upper section bears a stylized fleur-de-lys, and the swinger is in the shape of a six-petalled flower, outlined by a strongly-moulded frame reminiscent of architecture of the period. In common with another local find of a quatrefoil bearing what may be a central rose surrounded by four fleurs-de-lys linked by garlands or ropes, this piece may be purely decorative; it may also be inspired by devotion to the Virgin in that both the rose and the fleur-de-lys were symbols of Mary.
