A rim fragment of a cast copper alloy vessel of Medieval to Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1250 – c. AD 1650). Length: 34.1mm; width: 32.0mm and 2.3mm thick. Weight: 12.04g. The inner face has a shiny mid to dark-green patina and the outer face is heavily striated horizontally with irregular coarse shallow grooves. These features appear to be a result of the manufacturing process rather than part of a deliberate design. The outer face also has small patches of a hard black substance which may be solidified soot. Due to its small size, it is not possible to accurately estimate the outer diameter of the rim. However, it would have been very large. Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of the thirteenth century and to have continued at least until c. 1600 (Geake 2001. 52).
