Roman copper alloy as, possibly of Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD), reverse type unclear, minted in Rome, 138-161 AD.

Notes:

Part of a group of 29 coins found many years ago. Sam Moorhead (PAS advisor on Roman and Iron Age Coins) has studied and identified the coins. He comments: "Many of the coins have a distinctive water-worn patina consistent with their Thames findspot. The early peak in Period 7 (138-161: 6 coins) is consistent with many other PAS groups. Moreover, the votive deposits at Bath also showed this peak in Period 7. The latest coin pre-date 364. Coins of the House of Valentinian are scarcer in the south-east than in the south-west and further up the east coast, so this might be significant. Seen against other finds from the Thames, these coins might make an important contribution."
