An almost complete Post-medieval cast copper alloy mount in the form of an acorn, c. 17th century in date. Length: 37.1mm; width: 20.4mm and 3.4mm thick (excluding the rivets). Weight: 7.25g. The mount is slightly convex at the front and concave at the rear. At the front the seed (or fruit) is plain and has a small raised knop at the apex. The junction between the seed and the cupola is defined by a transverse rib which has a depth of about 2.0mm. The cupola is decorated with cross-hatching. At the base of the cupola there is a stort rectangular stalk. The rear face has stubs of two integral spikes on the longitudinal centre-line. It has a dark red and mottled pale green and black corroded surface and there is no trace of gilding or any other surface treatment. Similar acorn mounts can be found in Read, B. 2001. Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, Volume 1, page 29, figure 22, refs 331-334; Read dates these to the 17th century.
