Incomplete (Late Medieval)/ Early Post-Medieval openwork copper alloy sword or dagger chape, missing its backplate. It measures 50.3x35.2mm and weighs 9.7g. The chape is roughly triangular in shape, with one long edge curving. The short (open) end is diagonal and also slightly curving. The sides of the chape are angled slightly outwards also. That on the straight edge is higher than the curving edge. The chape 'stands' 6.2mm high. At the 'point' of the triangle is a rounded knop, flat on the reverse. To the front a rib follows the curving diagonal line of the open end. In the top third of the chape, with this as an edge, are six circular holes in a line, with the four at the centre arranged in a diamond pattern. These holes are c.2mm in diameter. Another hole extends either side. The one closest to the long curving edge is wider at c.4mm in diameter. Below is another diagonal (straight) rib. Below this, roughly the centre of the chape, is a an openwork crescent in the form of a U. On the reverse traces of solder can be seen. A small fragment of backplate is also visible at the base of the long curving edge. (15th)/ 16th century in date. As swords and daggers are similar in styles and sizes, it is difficult to tell which chapes belong with which weapon.
