An almost complete copper alloy strap mount in the form of an acorn. Probably sixteenth or seventeenth century (AD 1500 - AD 1700). Length: 37.4mm; width: 20.4mm and 4.5mm thick. Weight: 5.10g. The mount is convex at the front and concave at the rear. At the front the seed (or fruit) is plain and has a small raised knop at the apex. The junction between the seed and the cupola is defined by a transverse rib which has a depth of about 2.5mm. The cupola is decorated with cross-hatching. At the base of the cupola there is a stalk divided into two by a vertical indent. The rear face has two integral spikes on the longitudinal centre-line. The piece has a mid to dark green patina on the front and is bright green from active corrosion on the rear. There is no trace of gilding or any other surface treatment. Mounts in similar form and style have been published by Brian Read. These published mounts have been dated by Read to c. seventeenth century (Read 2001, 29, fig. 22, refs. 331-334).
