FINDS LIAISON'S REPORT

Silver gilt hooked tag dating to c.1450-1550 AD.

Description

Central plate from a Post Medieval hooked tag missing the attachment loop and hook. The remaining part is a sub-circular plate with a plain, flat back and convex, cast decoration on the front. The front is shaped into a central heart surrounded by a garland with five cinquefoils on it. Five circular holes in the recessed area between the heart and the wreath create an openwork appearance. The hook and loop are missing and there appear to be old breaks at the left and right corners on the top and at the bottom. (It is unlikely that these are where part of the garland has broken away, or that the hook, loop or both may have been soldered on separately as there is no evidence of soldering on the back). The fastener is silver with traces of gilding on the front of the plate around the garland.

Published examples of similarly decorated hooked tags have integral or separate loops and hooks e.g. Treasure case 2006 T316 (with separate wire loop) and Read (2008:126) No. 518 which has a loop cast solid with the plate and a soldered on separate hook.

Discussion

Hooked tags of this type were popular from c.1450-c.1550 AD and many variations are known. They were used as clothing fasteners. In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
