16th -17th century Fragmentary gold signet ring from 'Clifton area', Nottinghamshire

Personal signet-ring, with faceted shoulders, the back half of the hoop missing, the octagonal bezel finely engraved with a clear coat-of-arms, crest and mantling, within a dotted border. Reverse of bezel stamped with maker's mark, 'B' in a shield.

A characteristic type of signet ring of the period. The same mark, with identical shield shape, occurs on a posy ring in the BM (Dalton ring cat. 1912, no. 1195, for image see BM website, Collections Online). The mark is not identifiable in any of the standard sources and the posy ring is dated to the 17th century on the basis of shape and the lower case lettering style.

Metal content

The precious metal content of the ring fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%.

Post medieval finger ring; incomplete cast gold signet ring of probable 16th century date. The ring has an expanded octagonal bezel with a coat of arms design. There is a small hallmark stamped on the reverse of the bezel in the form of a capital letter 'B'. The band of the ring is of trapezoidal cross-section. About half of the band is missing.

Width (span) 20.4mm, length (bezel) 17.1mm, width (bezel) 15.0mm, thickness (bezel) 1.5mm, thickness (band) 1.7mm, weight 7.98g
