A Post Medieval pottery fragment: dish support from a chafing dish (1450-1650). The artefact consists of one dish support element from a chafing dish, manufactured in France, probably Saintonge. The dish support would have been one of around six pointed supports projecting upwards from the rim of the vessel. The fragment has been decorated with an incised face, designed to fill the triangular shape. At the upper edge, incised vertical strands of hair fill the uppermost point. Below this are incised eyebrows, deeply recessed eyes and a prominent projecting nose. The face also has a moustache or beard. The pottery fragment is made from a light biscuit-coloured fabric which has been decorated with a white glaze. Staining has caused the surface to acquire a red-brown hue in places. Dimensions: length: 34.83mm; width: 33.42mm; thickness: 13.72mm; weight: 12.66g.
Notes:
Chafing dishes were designed to contain charcoal which, when a dish was supported above it, would keep the dish warm.
