SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: BH-C8A956

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper-alloy seal matrix of 14th century date. No parallel could be found for this interesting seal matrix, which survives intact and with little corrosion. The printing face is circular and deeply incised. When printed, the central image shows a pair of sleeve-clad forearms extending towards the centre, where the protruding hands hold a heart. The legend runs clockwise from 12 o'clock and reads: 'MOVN QVER DONE', which translates as 'I gave you my heart' (in medieval French). It seems likely that this seal is intended to be somewhat light-hearted and witty, as the heart is depicted so as to give the illusion that it is a woman's breasts, or possibly buttocks. At the back, the seal tapers upwards and is hexagonal in section. At the top is a perforated loop. The object measures 20.1mm long and weighs 5.8g. The printing face is 16.7mm in diameter.
