A incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman Thealby brooch dating from the 2nd century AD. Thealby type brooches developed from the earlier Headstud brooch. The underside of the wings are decorated with vertical incised grooves and are oval in plan. The hinge mechanism is therefore a tubular type, with an iron axis bar. The pin recess is off-set. The pin is missing. The face of the bow is incised, with a deep groove from the head to above the foot. The sides of the bow are raised. The foot and catchplate are missing. Similar brooches can be seen in Hattatt, p.333, fig.192.
