Cast-in-one buckle plate engaged with incomplete iron pin bar and loop of cast pin. Split end with three rivets at attachment edge and six ring-and-dots on the front face. A shallow rectangular depression on the front, between a moulded rebate on both sides, shows no evidence of inlay. The frame was probably composite, i.e. copper alloy with an iron bar, and rather small. Length 24.5mm. Width 13mm. Thickness 4mm. Length of cleft in splint end 9mm. Stub of shank of pin 1.5mm wide and 4mm thick.
Formerly dated to the 4th-5th century. Now dated to the 11th century. Paralleled by a complete buckle from Farnham, Essex, which carries an animal head on the outside edge of the frame and another on the pin. Other similar pieces are listed on PAS database e.g. BH-9B4B78. Thanks are due to Helen Geake for pointing out the correct date.
