FINGER RING

Unique ID: SF-A4CEF6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete and abraded copper alloy finger ring of Roman date. The bezel and one shoulder survive, the remainder of the ring now missing due to old breaks. The bezel is oval in shape with the remains of a recessed oval setting that would once have contained inlaid enamel, glass or similar decoration. The shoulders are prominent and swell before tapering to a thin, oval shaped hoop of which only a tiny fragment survives. The ring fragment measures 17.37mm in width, 8.61mm in height, and weighs 1.48g. Examples of similar shaped Roman rings with swollen shoulders and oval bezels can be noted in Crummy (1983: no. 1778) and from Roman Hacheston (Blagg et al., 2004: nos. 79-83).
