Roman copper alloy coin. The coin is probably a sestertius of Marciana (died 114 AD), sister of the Emperor Trajan (98- 117 AD). The coin can be dated to 112 - 113 AD. The coin is very worn and it is not possible to see any detail on the obverse of the coin. However, on the reverse of the coin it to possible to see two elephants, advancing left, pulling a cart. It is possible to see one of the wheels of the cart at the bottom right of the coin. On a better preserved coin,it would be possible to see Marciana holding a patera and sceptre, sitting on the carriage which the elephants are pulling. The obverse of the coin should depict the bust of Marciana facing right, with hair arranged in coils on crown of head, surmounted with crescent shaped diadem. See Roman Imperial Coinage Volume II, page 300 number 750 and Plate XII, number 216 for an example of a similar coin.
