Romano British copper alloy shield stud with a round flat head, the front face decorated with two concentric engraved circles around a central dot, and an incomplete rectangular-sectioned shank with lateral countersunk perforation. Head diameter 21.5mm. Length >13mm. Shank 7.5 x 3mm in section. Perforation diameter 4 - 5.5mm. Cf. Oldenstein 1976 Taf. 50, Kat. Nr.573, a Schildnägel, used for fixing attaching shield boss to shield. A very similar example was found in 2005 at Hockwold cum Wilton (HER 5587). Such button-like objects may have had other uses (Bidwell, P. 1985 Vindolanda 121-2, fig.41 nos.32-3)
