Early medieval copper alloy brooch fragment, 35mm long, 32mm wide and 2mm thick. The object is in fair condition with a green patina and weighs 4.64 grams. The fragment represents the 'left' corner of the headplate of a great square headed brooch which is rectangular in form and section. The fragment is decorated with bands of pattern which echo its shape. five are present, three are decorated with abstract carvings, including rectangular shaped motifs, and two appear to be plainish gilded bands. The fragment is similar to the example from Newnham [II], plate 12 in Hines, J. 'A corpus of Anglo-Saxon great square-headed brooches'.
Notes:
The object was found in the same field as 7 other fragments which may represent a minimum of 5 brooches, suggesting a cemetery site.
