Incomplete fragment of a clay tobacco pipe bowl of late post medieval date (c.1660-1680). The pipe fragment measures 44mm length, bowl diameter 17.4mm, heel diameter 13.2mm, weight 8.56 grams. The information within this report is taken from information provided by Mr Rex Key of Broseley Pipe Museum to which sincere thanks are extended. Broseley style pipe, fitting David Atkinson's Broseley Type 2a classification, with oval heal, dated to c.1660-1680. The relief heal mark is complete but maker has yet to be identified. The mark consists of the initials WE within a circular cartouche. A large number of these pipes have been found, having been made in the Broseley style. The pipe shows signs of burnishing (straight, smoothing strokes) bottering (smoothing of the bowl rim) and rouletting - all typical Broseley finishing techniques.
