AXEHEAD

Unique ID: IOW-E597D0

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An almost complete polished stone axehead of Neolithic date (3500 BC – 2100 BC). Length: 102.9mm; width: 40.8mm and 17.0mm thick. Weight: 103.32g. This slender axehead is sub-triangular in plan and throughout its length it is sub-oval in cross-section. In plan, the butt is pointed but rounded. From the butt the sides flare outwards and downwards to the cutting edge. The cutting edge is evenly curved. There is no evidence that the cutting edge has been re-sharpened. In side view the implement is pointed oval in shape. The implement is not polished overall. Therefore, the rough-out surfaces are visible in places. There are four old small chips along one side of the cutting edge. There is an old break where a small part of the implement is missing at the tip of the butt. The stone is a type of fine-grained ‘greenstone’ with a surface Munsell Color: Olive brown 2.5Y 4/4. This axehead has been found with an American Indian quartzite projection point (probably Appalachian, see image in this report.). The projectile point is probably associated with the Eastern Woodland 'culture', perhaps Late Archaic (c 3500-2000 BP, or Early Woodland (2000-1800 BP) and is from the eastern US mid-Atlantic or south (east) regions (Pers.
