METAL WORKING DEBRIS

Unique ID: IOW-300AB7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A cast copper alloy casting jet of possible Bronze Age date (2150 BC – 800 BC). Length: 12.2mm; width: 26.3mm and 13.9mm thick. Weight: 7.13g. The object is roughly funnel-shaped and in plan has a flat sub-oval concave head, the surface of which is irregular and pitted. This uneven surface was probably created when the molten metal was solidifying. On the underside there is a pair of sprue elements (feeders). Each feeder is in the form of a short stub. The piece has traces of a dark green patina, although bright green powdery copper alloy corrosion products are also present on the surface. It is possible that this casting jet is later than the Bronze Age. Similar examples are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database. See finds from Blythburgh Parish, Suffolk (SF-9FFB87) and Badingham Parish, Suffolk (SF-C9AED6).
