A fragment from a late early-medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup terminal (11th century AD). The hollow back would have enclosed one of the arms of the lower part of the stirrup (Williams 1997, 1). The recess is off centre and lacks any supporting ledge. The terminal is zoomorphic, representing a beast's head with a snub-nose with flaring nostrils. On the lower surface there is a broadly circular depression under the nose. Beyond the moulded nose are possible tendrils, now truncated, with a gouged line below on each side. The ?tendrils enclose a V-shaped incision which would have continued into the eyes had the object not been broken. In form this terminal is directly comparable with one illustrated in Williams (1997, 2; ref. 2a). The metal has corroded to a red-brown colour with some lighter areas of corrosion product.
