STRAP END

Copper alloy strap end formed of two sheets of copper alloy joined together by six rivets. The strap end is roughly rectangular with one square end and one that is slightly rounded. The rivets are seperate and arranged in three regularly spaced pairs, three are in situ and three missing; they are 6.9mm long suggesting the mount was on a thick strap. Only a small amount of the back plate survives around the square end. The front plate is only 1.0mm thick but is cast with recessed cells on the front which are not reflected on the back. Between the pairs of rivets are recessed squares containing a raised lozenge outline surrounding a central raised square. There are extensive traces of gilding on the front and small amounts of red enamel in some of the recessed cells. The strap end is 49.7mm long, 17.3mm wide and 2.3mm thick, excluding the rivets. It weighs 6.15 grams. While no direct parallel was found in the usual sources the general style and use of gilding and enamel suggests a c.12th century AD date.
