A cast copper alloy chafing dish lug, which would have held the handle. Chafing dishes were domestic utensils made of metal or earthenware for holding burning charcoal or other combustible material. This was then used to cook food or keep it hot at the table (Lewis, 1973). This lug comprises two hooks cast integrally side by side. Each hook is rounded with a worn central slot for the handle to sit in. The area in between the hooks is narrowed. One terminal has a rounded projection, which was probably once used to attach the lug to the rest of the vessel. The projection is very worn and damaged. The object has an overall rectangular section. The metal is a pitted dark brownish-green colour. This object dates to the late medieval to post medieval period, circa 1450 – 1600. Similar lugs do appear on the PAS database, but they tend to only have a single hook, where as this example has two. A single hooked (or possibly broken) example can be seen on PAS database No. LIN-A3BD02 it was found in Willoughby with Sloothby (Lincolnshire).
