SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: SOMDOR240

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

The copper alloy matrix from the end of one arm of a Post-Medieval multi-armed seal matrix. The face of the matrix (the die) is broadly circular and inscribed with a design of a three masted sailing ship within a engrailed border. From the back of the matrix rises the stub of a handle, the handle is circular in section with a district casting line running down the sides at 12 and 6 o'clock on the matrix. The handle now ends in an old break just above the matrix. It is 16.1mm by 15.5mm and 6.4mm thick and weighs 4.06 grams.

SOMDOR239 found in the same area is related and probably from the same matrix.

Such multi-die matrices tend to be attributed a 17th-century date (see Read 1996, 152; no.1030, 1031) and have a different design on each die. See SOM-76F867 for a complete example with a similar ship on one die.
