Iron full cheek pony snaffle/bit with curved, joined mouth piece, probably dating from the late post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c.1700-1900. The snaffle bit is complete and its two parts undamaged although they have suffered from corrosion over the years. The two central bars are curved and joined at the centre by two very small loops. Each loop sits at the end of one half of the snaffle. These two loops are the most corroded parts of the snaffle. The outer sides of the snaffle each terminate in a pierced bulbous moulding which in turn is attached to a device that is composed of a bigger loop and a short vertical bar. The loop or ring would have attached the snaffle to the straps of the leather harness. The short, sturdy vertical bar seems to be a distinct feature of late post-medieval and early modern pony snaffles.
