MOUNT

Unique ID: HESH-DB6E66

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast copper alloy mount of probable post medieval date (1500-1650). The mount is an irregular sub-rectangular (lozenge) shape in plan and sub rectangular in cross section. The edges of the mount are slightly bevelled with the upper face being convex. The mount has been abraded and rounded in the plough-soil causing it to become slightly symmetrical in both plan and profile. It measures 19mm in length, 12.1mm width and is 3mm thick. The mount weighs 1.73 grams. The front and rear faces of the mount are undecorated. There are two cast lug-like projections on the upper and lower edges of the rear of the mount. These lugs would have been passed through pierced holes in a leather strap (or such like) and then bent over to secure the mount. They are sub-oval in shape and cross section. Both of these projections are complete. The mount is of a mid green colour with an even but abraded patina that covers all surfaces. The abrasion is most noticeable around the extremities of the mount where there is much damage from movement in the ploughsoil. Similar mounts can be seen in Brian Read’s book: ‘Metal Artefacts from Antiquity’ Nos.312-3.
