DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)

Unique ID: SWYOR-B29CB1

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A copper alloy incomplete dress fastener; part of a seventeenth century hook and eye clasp. The operational part of the piece is missing so it is not clear whether it is the hook or the catch piece. The fastener is a plate of metal which is currently oval, but which may originally have been more trefoil shaped. There is a broken sewing loop at one end, and the other end of the plate is damaged, so the hook or catch, and the other two sewing loops are missing. The reverse is plain and the whole plate is bent. The front is decorated with a swirling fleur like design which is typical of the seventeenth century. Similar examples are illustrated on page 100 of Bailey’s ‘Buttons and fasteners’ (2004) and similar examples on the database are SOM-E0FF65 and IOW-4C1531.
