The heart on the front decorated with applied filigree circles and knops radiating from the centre. The back flat with no sign of previously-attached bars or hooks, though the front right of the object suggests that a projecting element there has been torn away and lost. Length: 20 mm.
It is not clear how the object was worn or used but its decoration suggests a close comparison with Tudor dress fittings with hooks and attachment bars. Heart-shaped dress fittings are not as yet recorded through the Treasure Act however.
Probably 15th-16th century.
As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 (Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections).2008-07-08 09:48:182020-07-03 17:26:52322008-06-01TTNCM 81/20105Probably11312936001487329D2019B8222SOMSilver11728IncompleteMEDIEVALMDx14221p0gjgrsxwzxPOST MEDIEVALPMx41047p0gjgrs6sgxMetal detectorCircaCirca22452710578102611049541427Restricted AccessST4309ST40NWCrewkerne6100181308329465.JPG1891216Post Medieval Hooked TagSomerset County Council5images/npayne/South WestCharacter undeterminedCultivated landEuropean RegionCountySomersetDistrictSouth SomersetCivil Parish50.8853-2.79252Restricted AccessAcquired by museum after being declared Treasure96642
