STRAP FITTING

Incomplete medieval copper alloy so-called 'strap-end buckle', with incomplete frame and missing its backplate. Curiously, it has no piercing for the pin. It measures 34.7x18.3mm and weighs 4.28g. The plate has a crenellated end, with three V-shaped cuts. Just before is an in situ rivet. The plate is decorated with two horizontal and two vertical grooves in a + formation between two shallower grooves flanking the long edges. Further tiny horizontal grooves decorate the crenellated end. The plate is c.14mm in length and 14.4mm wide at the crenellated end, narrowing to c.13mm. The narrower end is bound by a 1.6mm wide rib. Between the plate and the frame is a 11mm wide area with incurved edges. An in situ rivet is at its centre. The base of the frame is openwork - roughly rectangular in shape with a c.2mm diameter piercing to either edge and an 'M' shaped opening between. The frame itself curves outwards 8mm before the (ancient) break. A break at the centre shows there was probably a central arm and so was a 'lyre' shaped example. The base of this arm projects into the base of the frame behind, creating the V shape of the M hole. The frame is decorated with two grooves in an inverted V. The reverse of the incomplete strap-end buckle is rough and the two rivets project downwards. 15th century in date.
