A cast copper alloy lug for the handle of a chafing dish of late medieval or early post-medieval date. Similar handle lugs were also used for small chests and casks. The lug measures 24.1mm by 15.2mm by 9.1mm and weighs 12.5g. It is in the form of a flat oval cylinder, which has a central circular perforation (diameter 5.9mm) and a slightly flared end from which projects the remains of an integral rivet. The lug would have been riveted to the main body of the dish and its perforation would have contained a drop handle. This handle lug probably comes from a vessel of Lewis's type B, C or D, and therefore probably dates from c. 1450-1650 (Lewis 1973).

Notes:

Chafing dishes were filled with burning charcoal, and plates or dishes of food were placed on top of them to keep warm.

Class: handle lug
