STRAP END

A cast copper-alloy late Roman - early Saxon 'amphora-shaped' strap end. This example is complete apart from the lower point. The attachment end has a chip carved edge with a single rivet hole through it and then narrows into the neck of the 'amphora' with chip carved handles. There is another rivet hole between the handles. The main body of the 'amphora' then flares outwards with downwards sloping shoulders, and would have tapered to a point. The front face is decorated with three lines of punched diagonal dashes that outline and bisect the strap end. The four ring and dot motifs are also outlined with rings of dashes. In between these are simple punched dots
