A complete 2nd-century Roman copper-alloy plate brooch. The brooch is rectangular in form with very slight abrasions to the corners. The upper surface features a border, within which diagonal lines extend to the corners from a central annulet. The four broadly triangular areas thus created are recessed to take enamel. It appears from surviving traces that the smaller cells adjoining the shorter sides would have been filled with blue enamel while the larger cells were filled with red. It is uncertain as to what, if anything, would have filled the middle of the central circle. The lower surface of the brooch is flat, with two semicircular lugs at one short end and a catchplate at the other (L.: 7.4mm). The lugs are perforated to take the axis bar. The pin survives around the axis bar formed of three coils, the outer two curved round below into the chord, the central coil emerging uppermost as the pin. The pin has been abraded and slightly bent. The brooch has been bent upwards slightly at the pin end. It is corroded to a mid/dark green colour, the red-brown colour of the pin suggesting a different alloy. A similar rectangular plate brooch can be found illustrated in Hattatt (2000, 349; ref. 584), although it has six cells instead of four.
