Medieval incomplete buckle with integral hollow or socketed plate, pin and almost all of the frame are missing. A pair of transverse moulded grooves decorating the bar is interrupted by the pin hole, and there is a waist between the bar and the socket. On the front of the plate the sacred monogram ihc in black-letter is picked out by engraved lines on a transversely engraved ground, to be viewed with the frame pointing downwards. Two iron rivets are driven through the top of the inscription. Surviving length 38mm. Width at attachment edge 22mm. Socket width 18.5mm, thickness 2mm, length/depth 17mm. This type of buckle, normally called "lyre-shaped" was popular in northwest Europe during the period between c.1375 and c.1450 (Fingerlin 1971, Abb. 286-7, 289, 291 and 336).
