Bronze age axe; cast copper alloy high flanged palstave axe of the middle Bronze Age, probably c.1500-1300 BC. The axe has wide, almost lozenge-shaped flanges and a simple stop ridge across the septum at the base of the flanges. The blade below the stop ridge is proportionally quite long, flaring gently to a fairly narrow blade. About half of one flange is missing and there are knicks taken from the other flange. The metal is quite corroded with much pitting across its surface. Much of it has a thick, green-brown patina but some areas, especially at the breaks, have the bright, pale, powdery green of copper chloride corrosion (“bronze disease”). Length 157.18mm, width (blade) 56.4mm, width (at stopridge) 30.3mm, thickness 29.4mm, thickness (at stopridge) 13.2mm, weight 430.7g
