STRAP END

Unique ID: IOW-8453C5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An almost complete copper alloy strap end of Medieval date, c. AD 1330 – c. AD 1380 (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 135, ref. 620). Length: 31.5mm; width: 21.3mm and 5.5mm thick. Weight: 8.81g. This tongue-shaped strap end is made of sheet copper alloy. The front plate has sides which are bent at angle of 90° to which a separate back plate is soldered. In each corner, at the top, a copper alloy rivet penetrates both plates. The rivets are dome-headed at the front with flattened heads at the rear. The surfaces generally have a mid-green patina but there are small areas of where the patina is lost. There is also some copper alloy corrosion products. The weight includes some soil within the plates. A roughly similar strap end made of iron was found during archaeological excavations at Billingsgate, London. This London find which has a pointed base has six rivets. See reference above.
