ROWEL SPUR

Unique ID: SUSS-EF66E6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper alloy rowel spur of Post-Medieval date, probably seventeenth century (c.AD 1600 - c.AD 1700). One side of the spur is complete and has a figure of 8 terminal; the side meets the 8 in the centre, between the loops. The other side is broken about one third of the way along it's lengh. The sides are D shaped in profile and appear plain with traces of tinning and only a small crest. The neck is short and plain as is the rowel box suggesting the rowel was of small size. The rowel and pin are missing; the presence of a brown substance around the lugs suggest that the pin was iron. While Rowel spurs were in use from the 13th century, this plain example with small rowel and figure of 8 terminal probably dates to the post medieval period. It is 67.7mm long, 59.4mm wide, 11.2mm thick and weighs 23.2 grams.

Notes:
