Post medieval socketed handle of a whittle tang knife or other tool. Of sub-rectangular section the object widens towards the proximal end near which there are four moulded round apertures. The broad sides are decorated with symmetrical moulded foliar and floriate decoration inlaid with enamel. White enamel is extant and there are patches of probable blue and red. There is no visible means of securing the tang. Similarly decorated handles frequently end in a figure, e.g. examples from Middleton (HER 31614) and Surlingham (HER 31391). Length 74mm. Open end 6.5 x 4mm (oval socket mouth 4.5 x 3.5mm). Maximum width 15mm. Maximum thickness 7mm. 17th century.
Referred to by Papin and Soulat (2017, 6; note 31), and comparable to an example illustrated by Papin and Soulat (2017, 6; fig. 10) found at Enkhuizen, North Holland, Netherlands, and also SWYOR-92474B on this database.
