VESSEL

Unique ID: WAW-04C857

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

2 moulded ceramic body sherds of Samian Ware vessels, probably bowls. One rim is plain, the other is slightly ‘P’ shaped in profile. Otherwise both sherds are undecorated. The fabric is a fine red/orange colour with a glossy dark red slipped surface. The sherds are heavily abraded. The sherds together weigh 9g. The sherd is probably Samian Ware, suggesting the vessel is a table vessel, rather than used for utilitarian purposes. Samian Ware was imported into Britain from the mid 1st to mid 3rd century (Webster, P. 1996 ‘Roman Samian Pottery in Britain’ CBA Practical Handbook 13).
