Eleven pieces of jet, probably waste material from jet working. Eight of the pieces have scratch marks and sawmarks on them suggesting they are worked to a limited degree, though none are carved or polished. One of the main sources of jet is Whitby on the East Coast of Yorkshire, and jet was taken to York to be worked as well as there being smaller workshops in other local towns. This group was found en route between Whitby and York. Jet jewellery was very popular in the Roman period, but also in the Victorian era (Allason-Jones, 1996, Roman Jet in the Yorkshire Museum). This material was found near to a Roman fort and Vicus, so a Roman date is possible, but a Victorian date seems just as likely. With no datable associated finds or clear decoration, it is impossible to assign a more accurate date.
