A Roman Headstud brooch made of copper alloy. Headstud brooches date from the early 2nd Century onwards. Each brooch would have been worn on the shoulder and the chain would have been suspended between them. The head of the brooch features the ring and dot headstud. The dot appears to contain a green stone/glass. Whilst the ring has been inlaid with enamel. The wings are short and decorated with two incised vertical grooves. The wings have a concave reverse, which the hinge mechanism would have been built into. The loop that would have held the spring and axis bar survive, but the spring/hinge mechanism and pin no longer survive. The bow tapers to the foot. The bow is decorated with 15 squares, which extend down the front. These may all have been inlaid with enamel, but only traces survive. The foot is formed from a large rounded knop. But the catchplate has broken off. Similar to Hattatt, p332-3.
