The coin has a diameter of 17.43mm and is 2.14mm thick. It weighs 2.1g. There is some damage to one edge and much of the silver plating has worn away. A very similar coin on the database is ESS-8BD770. Contemporary copies of coins of the Severan period (AD193-235) are commonly found on sites in Britain. Some are good quality plated coins, others have a poorer quality silver wash and some are made from base silver. These coins are probably more common as site-finds (as opposed to hoard-finds) because they were more likely to be rejected in the market place and by savers. However, given the large quantity of such coins, it is probable that they played a role in the economy, possibly substituting for sestertii, dupondii and asses which were not imported in large numbers to Britain at this time.2008-05-14 17:38:182012-09-04 14:42:363012008-02-05Certain11321001482B157A013037222SWYORCopper alloy10627Silver11728IncompleteROMANROx41218p0gjgrs69wsMetal detectorCircaCirca21781322028210192105541430SE4829SE4829SE42NE53.75516-1.27349610098879Laureate and bearded bust facing rightIMP (C) […]Salus seated facing left with her elbow resting on the back of the chair (feeding a snake arising from an altar)(SALV)S P[VBLICA]264111232211287Radiate (antoninianus)Severus Alexander50018342Alexander_Severusseverus_alexanderPeriod 11222-238Hardly worn: extremely finelittle_or_no_wear12 o'clock36Contemporary copy (Plated copy) 174965PAS 141 plated coin.jpg282639Roman coin; contemporary plated copy radiate probably of Macrinus West Yorkshire Archaeology Service5images/acooper/Yorkshire and the HumberCultivated landEuropean RegionCountyNorth YorkshireDistrictSelbyCivil Parish53.7456-1.25581Burton Salmon608995423
