Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4.i1, lanceolate motif, flat wing ends type, West Midlands) and 2nd-mid-3rd century AD date. The brooch is near-complete, missing the pin (with a distorted length of 63.3mm and a weight of 17.8g). The spring mechanism is secured within a Polden Hill claw type arrangement. The wings have expanded terminals (with a width of 22.1mm) and are otherwise plain. The sides of the head have a low curved moulding (giving the head a width of 11.9mm). The bow is of D-shaped section with straight sides converging towards the foot. The bow is decorated with a central rib in sunken relief and enhanced with notches, now eroded. The rib is flanked with diagonal lentoid mouldings, which zigzag along each side of the bow. The catch-plate begins as a rib at the rear of the bow. The spherical foot-knob (with a diameter of 4.6mm) stems from a concave moulding at the base of the bow. The surface is well preserved, but eroded and has a pale green patina.
Notes:
The brooch can be paralleled with an example recorded by Hattatt (1985, p 84) found at Petersfield, Hampshire and of Hull's type 99. The brooch has similar decoration but differs in having a deep appendage between the head and the catch-plate and also differs in the treatment of the foot-knob.
