Incomplete medieval gilt copper alloy book fitting or furniture fitting, appliqué figure, probably of a saint (probably male), worn and corroded, comprising a hollow backed half-round standing figure (now headless), with the folds of his robes forming cells for enamel, missing from the upper part, blue enamel (occasionally flecked with orange) surviving in the lower half only. The figure's left hand rests on his right elbow and the right hand holds a book. The angled semi-circular base of the robe has an engraved wavy line between two curved lines that echo and border the upper curve. There are traces of engraved detail on the hands and on the possible purse. 23 x >55mm. The figure is pierced by two rivet-holes. Cf. Enamels of Limoges 1100-1350 (1996), no.49 for a figure of Christ with the folds of His robes enamelled in a similar manner. Late 12th-early 13th century.
