WEIGHT

Unique ID: HESH-81CA15

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast lead or lead alloy (probable) undecorated weight of probable medieval or post-medieval date (1300 - 1650). The weight is broadly sub-triangular in plan and cross section. It measures 60.4mm in length, 61.3mm width and is 26.4mm thick. It weighs 249.85 grams or 8.9 ozs. The weight is a mid grey colour with an abraded and corroded patina that covers all surfaces. It has been marked and abraded in the soil; this has caused the weight to become asymmetrical. A large number of inclusions (grit and stone) have been embedded in the surface corrosion of the weight. Similar weights have been dated to the medieval period by Gordon Bailey (cf. 40 p 33 – Detector Finds ). A significant amount of material has been lost from the lowest face and it is possible that this may have been used as standard 9oz pan weight. A direct parallel has not been found in Biggs and Withers – Lead Weights although it does resemble some of the cruder shield and standing weights
