A copper alloy Roman brooch; a dolphin brooch dating from the first century. The brooch is 40.6mm long, 27.6mm wide and 17mm thick. It has tubular wings with a slot for the hinged pin which is missing. The fronts of the wings are decorated with raised transverse lines and beaded lines. The bow is humped and tapers to a point at the foot. There is a raised line down the centre of the bow, and possible diagonal lines on each side, but corrosion makes these debatable. The catchplate is broken and very little survives. The brooch has a patchy light green and brown patina. This type of brooch dates from AD 55 - 100 (Worrall, Northern Newsletter Winter 2007), and similar examples can be seen on page 298 of Hattatt's "Visual Catalogue" (2000).
