An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 5, flat wing ends type, Western Group), cf. Mackreth 2011, 5.c. Plate 50. The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated wing caps at each terminal. Through the perforations there is a copper alloy axis bar. Around the axis bar, the spring is coiled 9 times with the horizontal chord across the top of the wings being incomplete. The pin has broken off from the brooch. The wings are undecorated. In the centre of the upper edge of the wings there is an up turned hook which originally would have supported the chord. The bowhead is slightly hump-like in profile and is sub-rectangular in section. The bow head is decorated with a row of concentric '^' shaped ridges which continue down the bow. The bow has off-set sides to the bow head and terminates with a broken oval section. The break is not recent. The surface of the brooch has an incomplete dark grey patina. It measures 21.74mm long, 22.47mm wide and weighs 7.5g. The brooch is a Polden Hill type (Bayley and Butcher (Bayley and Butcher, 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A technological and Typological Study Based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries p. 160) comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands.
