Post Medieval book clasp; cast copper alloy book clasp with gilding and the incised letters 'E W'. The clasp is probably of 18th century date. It consists of a flat, sub-rectangular plate with waved edges to the long sides. One end terminates in a short, narrow hook, which curves backwards beneath the clasp. The other end has a hinge with a narrow, circular pin which has shifted from its original position and is currently extending out beyond the top of the hinge. The hinge attaches to a second plate which is ornately shaped, tapering toward the end via two lobes on either side and terminating in a tri-lobed 'fleur' shaped terminal. This smaller plate has three tiny, circular rivet holes. The main plate is decorated with the incised letters 'E.W' in gothic script and the whole book clasp is gilded on both faces. Length 53.6mm, width (at hinge) 18.3mm, thickness (hinge) 2.7mm, thickness (plate) 0.7mm, weight 4.98g Ref: for comparison, see the article in Bailey's "Detector Finds", pages 70-80, especially clasp number 27 on page 77.
