Early Medieval stirrup mount; cast copper alloy stirrup mount of Anglo-Scandinavian style, dating from the period 1025-1100. Williams' Class A, Type 4. The mount is roughly oval shaped with a loop on either side at the bottom, giving a broader base. One of the loops is now missing, as is much of the horizontal base plate, and there is a break at the top of the mount. The remaining loop seems to have a debased animal head at the point where it meets the main oval of the mount. The mount itself has moulded decoration in a sinuous pattern radiating from a raised boss around the centre of the mount. The boss is an odd shape, suggestive of a nose and the decoration to either side may represent ears. There is an openwork element to the lower half of the design, which four holes passing through the mount. Much of the original surface of the metal is missing and there are areas of both dark green and reddish-brown copper corrosion. Length 39.8mm, width 25.6mm, thickness 4.4mm, weight 15.34g Ref: Williams, page 40, especially mount 81.
