a copper alloy Roman bow brooch. It is probably a Hod Hill type with a straight bow. The upper, rolled-over terminal is incomplete, and the pin is missing. The bow is a narrow triangular shape, tapering toward a point at its foot behind which is the catchplate. The bow has a shallow central longitudinal rib, and the surfaces are corroded. The leg is straight in profile. The brooch measures 39.76mm in length and is 10.2mm wide at the upper terminal. It weighs 2.24g.
Hod Hill brooches are likely to date to the first century AD. This example bears some resemblence to one from Cambridge, which also has elements of Bagendon and Aucissa types, and is illustrated in Hattatt, 1987, no.861.
