Roman copper alloy brooch. The brooch is of the developed crossbow type and dates to the fourth or fifth century AD. The upper section of the bow is highly arched, the lower section is now missing. The brooch is hinged, the pin now missing. An ‘onion shaped’ knop remains on the left of the brooch. A similar knop is intact on the upper bow. There are two holes at the top of the crossbar, which are positioned at either side of the knop on the upper bow. A similar brooch, with two holes in the crossbar is illustrated in Bayley & Butcher 2004; catalogue number 322. Bayley and Butcher (2004) suggest that the holes on the crossbow may have held a decorative casting.
